A lot of women grow up being told to "think it through," ask everyone else's opinion, and have a tidy explanation ready before they're allowed to trust a choice. Human design authority flips that script. It's the part of your chart that shows the physical, felt process you're actually wired to use when deciding something — not your mind, but your body. Below are all 7 authority types. This is a self-reflection framework, not a scientifically validated system, but plenty of people find it a genuinely useful structure for learning to trust themselves again.
Emotional Authority
The most common authority, found in roughly half of people. If you have Emotional authority, you don't have true clarity in the moment — you move through a wave of highs and lows over hours or days, and clarity arrives only once the wave settles. The practice is simple to say and hard to do: never decide in the heat of the moment, whether that moment feels amazing or awful. Sleep on it. Ask "can I wait?" before every yes or no.
Sacral Authority
Found in Generators and Manifesting Generators. This authority speaks in an immediate gut response — a felt "yes" that shows up as expansive energy, or a felt "no" that shows up as a contraction or a groan. It answers questions asked directly and in the present tense; it doesn't strategize about the future. The skill here is learning to notice the sensation before your mind talks you out of it.
Splenic Authority
The quietest of all the authorities. Splenic authority speaks once, in the moment, as a subtle instinct — not a strong gut punch, more like a whisper you'll miss if you're not paying attention. It's oriented toward safety and survival in real time, and it doesn't repeat itself. If you have this authority, the growth edge is trusting the first, quiet hit instead of waiting for louder confirmation that never comes.

Ego (Heart) Authority
Ego authority decides based on willpower and what you have the genuine energy and desire to commit to — not what you "should" want. It's tied to the heart center and is closely linked to promises and self-worth. The practice is asking honestly, "Do I actually want this enough to fight for it?" rather than what would look good or please someone else.
Self-Projected Authority
This authority finds clarity through the sound of your own voice, in conversation with someone who can simply reflect you back rather than give advice. Talking it out — not to be told what to do, but to hear yourself land on it — is the actual mechanism. Journaling out loud or recording a voice note can work as well as a trusted friend.
Mental (Environmental) Authority
Also called "no inner authority," this type has no defined authority center at all and instead processes decisions externally, through the environment and by talking to multiple different people in multiple different places. Clarity comes from the outside in, through the process of discussing a decision across several conversations and noticing what shifts.
Lunar Authority
Unique to Reflectors, who make up roughly 1% of people. Because Reflectors have no defined centers at all, their authority is the moon itself — taking a full lunar cycle, about 29 days, to make major decisions, sampling how a choice feels across different days and different moon transits before committing. It is the slowest authority by design, and that slowness is the whole point.
yap breaks down your human design chart in plain language and pairs it with daily journaling prompts, so you can actually practice using your authority instead of just reading about it.

None of these authorities are about being "right" — they're about noticing where your real clarity actually lives, instead of defaulting to whatever felt safest to perform growing up: overexplaining, seeking permission, deciding by committee. Learning your authority is less "the universe telling you what to do" and more a permission slip to trust the felt sense you already have and just haven't been listening to.
